چکیده
A novel configuration of a distributed fiber sensor by Brillouin gain analysis has been developed for temperature and strain monitoring. It uses a single laser source, and the required light signals are all generated with an electro-optic modulator, resulting in high stability and excellent reliability of the measuring setup. Measurement of the induced strain in a wound fiber is presented as a demonstration of the system performance. 1996 Optical Society of America

Pulse Shape effects on Backscattering Brillouin gain for distributed fiber sensing
Distributed fiber sensing based on Brillouin gain scattering (BGS) principle is a useful way to develop devices capable to measure temperature and/or strain in optical fibers. In these distributed sensors, spatial resolution is a topic of special interest in the distributed fiber sensing field. The influence of the probe-pulse shape in the interaction between the pulsed light and the continuous...
متن کاملPower Thresholds and Pump Depletion in Brillouin Fiber Amplifiers
The Brillouin fiber amplifier (BFA) has been used in Brillouin optical time (frequency) domain analyzer based sensors. The performance of this sensor depends on pump depletion which occurs when the threshold is reached and when the Brillouin gain is saturated. Although threshold definitions are common for Brillouin fiber generators (BFG), there is no explicit threshold definition for BFA. More ...
متن کاملSystem optimization of a long-range Brillouin-loss-based distributed fiber sensor.
We report a high-performance 25 km Brillouin-loss-based distributed fiber sensor through optimizing system parameters. First, the Brillouin spectrum distortion and measurement error induced by the excess amplification on probe pulse are investigated, and the results indicate that a low continuous-wave pump power is essential to decrease the measurement error. Then an optimal pulse pair is deter...
متن کاملImpact of pump depletion on the determination of the Brillouin gain frequency in distributed fiber sensors
The energy transfer between the two interacting optical waves in a distributed sensor based on stimulated Brillouin scattering can lead to a non-uniform spectral distribution of the pumping power after a long propagation. This results in a spectrally distorted gain that biases the determination of the maximum gain frequency. A quantitative analytical model gives an expression for the tolerable ...
متن کاملEffect of pulse depletion in a Brillouin optical time-domain analysis system.
Energy transfer between the interacting waves in a distributed Brillouin sensor can result in a distorted measurement of the local Brillouin gain spectrum, leading to systematic errors. It is demonstrated that this depletion effect can be precisely modelled. This has been validated by experimental tests in an excellent quantitative agreement. Strict guidelines can be enunciated from the model t...
